2026 Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship for Specialized Training College Students.

Under the Japanese Government’s (MEXT) Scholarship Program, foreign students who want to attend Japanese specialized training institutions can apply for scholarships from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT).

Advantages

  • A monthly allowance of 117,000 yen.
  • For grantees studying or conducting research in specifically designated regions, the monthly scholarship amount will be increased by a supplemental regional stipend of 2,000 yen or 3,000 yen.
  • Specialized training colleges and preparatory educational institutions will waive their tuition, admission exam, and matriculation fees.

Conditions

  • Candidates need to be citizens of a countries with diplomatic ties to Japan.
  • In theory, candidates must have been born on April 2, 2001, or later.

Educational Background

  • Candidates need to be open to learning Japanese.
  • A health certificate in the required format, signed by a doctor, attesting to the applicant’s lack of any physical or mental disorders that might prevent them from studying in Japan is required.
  • It is theoretically required that candidates be able to travel to Japan between April 1, 2026, and April 7, 2026. On or after April 1, 2026, the home dwelling should be left.
  • In theory, applicants will enter Japan with the status of “Student” residents after obtaining a new “Student” visa at the Japanese diplomatic post in their home country or region.

Selection Process

  • The initial screening of applicants will be carried out by the Japanese diplomatic missions through interviews, written academic exams, and review of the application materials supplied.
  • All applicants must take the written academic examinations in mathematics, English, and Japanese. During the written exams, calculators and other gadgets are prohibited.
  • The Japanese diplomatic mission in the applicant’s nation will determine the exact time and date of the First Screening results notice; the rationale for the screening’s findings will not be revealed. Passing the first screening does not guarantee that a student will be chosen for the MEXT Scholarship.
  • MEXT will suggest applicants who passed the First Screening. After that, MEXT will select the recipients of the scholarship by conducting the Second Screening of the suggested applicants. MEXT chooses applicants from every academic discipline. (4) After January 2026, the Japanese diplomatic representation in the applicant’s nation will notify the applicants of the final selection results. The results’ causes will not be revealed. The choice on the placement college for specialized training will not be subject to any complaints.
