The consequences of climate change are wreaking havoc around the world. In Nigeria, its effects have resulted in severe drought, desertification, flooding, and disruptions in rainfall patterns. These effects harm man’s health, well-being, and the environment. Agricultural production have been severely harmed, resulting in a high poverty rate in the north. Extreme flooding and disease transmitted through contaminated water have been observed in the south. In acknowledgment of this, Climate Smart Nigeria, in collaboration with the Glow Initiative for Economic Empowerment and with the support of Access Bank PLC, is investing in a new generation of young energy leaders to drive change for energy transition and climate action in Nigeria.

The Climate Leadership Fellowship (Special edition for Energy Leaders) is meant to give specialist training to fellows within or are passionate and willing to make a difference in the clean cooking, clean energy, solar power, and waste-to-energy sectors on the concept and applications of renewable energy for better climate.

Following training, all fellows will adopt a school and educate climate change and renewable energy, thereby grooming young people to promote a climate-resilient nation. All fellows will get a credential of climate leadership as well as a climate education package for teachers in schools.

Benefits

  • Provide expert climate change advocacy training in the context of clean energy transition and leadership to enhance national climate resilience.Introduce young people to numerous options in the renewable energy business.
  • To develop Green Clubs in 200 secondary schools in Nigeria’s six geographical zones.
  • To train and mentor 200 young Nigerians as climate change educators throughout the year.
  • To train 20000 secondary school students as climate champions through the fellows Adopt a School and Teach Climate Change in Year One.
  • To provide internship and job experience for educated climate advocates through the Adopt a School programme.
  • To invest in and promote a climate resilient energy sector.
  • Build 200 sustainable and climate-smart schools across the six geopolitical zones.

Requirements

  • Open to youth aged 22 – 35 years;
  • Demonstrated leadership for climate change and renewable energy;
  • Part of a growing environmental/renewable energy organization or involved/interested in a renewable energy business (serving Corp members with interest in renewable energy can apply);
  • Graduated from University; Interested in clean/renewable energy solutions for electricity or for cooking;
  • Passion to promote awareness for climate change. From any part of the world but resident in Nigeria.

Selected applicants should be available and willing to teach climate change within their communities using the provided toolkit, participate in the climate leadership expert training, submit a fellowship work plan, and be available for all virtual meetings
