This program is a partnership between CMU-Africa and the Mastercard Foundation to support students whose talent and promise exceed their financial resources. The program provides generous financial, social, and academic support for the scholars, as well as opportunities for leadership development, career preparation, and giving back to their communities.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Carnegie Mellon University Africa Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program 2024, you must meet the following criteria:
- You must be an African citizen.
- You must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field of study.
- You must have a strong academic record and demonstrate a commitment to excellence.
- You must have demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to giving back to your community.
- You must have faced significant social and economic barriers to accessing higher education.
- You must be interested in pursuing a Master of Science degree in Information Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Engineering Artificial Intelligence at CMU-Africa.

Financial Coverage
The Carnegie Mellon University Africa Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program 2024 covers the following expenses for the scholars:
- Application preparation support
- Orientation
- Tuition and fees
- Health insurance
- Travel and basic living expenses
- Project and entrepreneurship support
Requirements
To apply for the Carnegie Mellon University Africa Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program 2024, you must fulfill the following requirements:
- You must submit an online application form through the CMU-Africa website.
- You must complete two competency tests: Quantitative Ability Test (QAT) and English Proficiency Test (EPT). These tests are administered online by CMU-Africa and are free of charge. You will receive an email with instructions on how to access the tests after you submit your online application form.
- You must submit two letters of recommendation from academic or professional references who can attest to your academic ability, leadership potential, and commitment to giving back to your community. You will be asked to provide the names and email addresses of your recommenders in the online application form, and they will receive an email with instructions on how to submit their letters online.
- You must submit a personal statement that describes your academic and professional goals, your motivation for applying to CMU-Africa and the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, your leadership experience and achievements, your community involvement and impact, and how you plan to use your education to contribute to the development of Africa. The personal statement should be no more than 500 words and should be uploaded as a PDF file in the online application form.
Document Requirements
In addition to the requirements mentioned above, you must also submit the following documents as part of your application:
- A copy of your official transcript or degree certificate from your previous institution(s). If your transcript or degree certificate is not in English, you must also provide a certified translation. You can upload these documents as PDF files in the online application form.
- A copy of your national identity card or passport. You can upload this document as a PDF file in the online application form.

Application Procedure
The application procedure for the Carnegie Mellon University Africa Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program 2024 consists of the following steps:
- Visit the CMU-Africa website and click on “Apply Now” to access the online application form.
- Fill out the online application form with your personal information, academic background, test scores, work experience, extracurricular activities, awards and honors, references, personal statement, and document uploads.
- Submit your online application form before the deadline of January 15, 2024.
- Complete the QAT and EPT tests within two weeks of submitting your online application form. You will receive an email with instructions on how to access the tests after you submit your online application form.
- Wait for the admission decision from CMU-Africa. You will be notified by email if you are shortlisted for an interview or if you are accepted or rejected for admission.
- If you are accepted for admission, you will also receive an email from the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program team with instructions on how to confirm your acceptance and complete the scholarship agreement.
Deadline
The deadline for applying for the Carnegie Mellon University Africa Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program 2024 is January 15, 2024. You must submit your online application form and complete the QAT and EPT tests by this date. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
